Does the state have a sentencing commission? No. There was an Alaska Sentencing Commission that was active from 1990 to 1993, but there is not a currently active Commission. Click here to learn more.
Does the state have sentencing guidelines? Yes, though they are not commonly referred to as "sentencing guidelines." Alaska's legislature has created a statutory set of presumptive sentencing ranges for different classes of crimes (see AS 12.55.125).
If yes, are the sentencing guidelines voluntary/advisory or mandatory? Voluntary/advisory. Judges can sentence above or below the presumptive sentencing ranges if certain aggravating or mitigating factors (also defined by statute at AS 12.55.155) are present in the case.
