Agents not the only ones who deserve clemency

Ealert - 1.23.09

Dear FAMM supporter,

The day before leaving office, President Bush issued his last two presidential commutations.  They went to two former Border Patrol agents who shot an unarmed man while he was running away.

While they may not be the most sympathetic applicants for commutations, they were serving mandatory minimum sentences, which FAMM opposes.  The judge was forced to apply 10-year mandatory sentences to each of them for firing their guns.

It's a shame that President Bush didn't include in his final commutations some of the thousands of nonviolent, first-time, or low-level drug offenders who are serving long mandatory sentences and definitely deserve mercy.  We're asking President Obama to do better.

You can help by drawing attention to the need for commutations.  Please take a minute and write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper highlighting the importance of clemency.  FAMM's action center gives you talking points to use in your letters, but letters that are personalized by you have the best chance of being published. Click here to join us in asking President Obama to show more mercy than we saw from President Bush.

Can't write a letter?  Donate to FAMM instead!  Your gift of $5, $10, or more will help us ask the new Administration for more commutations and better sentencing policies!

Thanks for your support --

Julie
