North Carolina legislative update
March 2007
North Carolina’s legislators are once again facing a budget deficit, spiraling corrections costs and overcrowded prisons. FAMM will be reminding lawmakers that they could still save North Carolinians hundreds of millions of dollars over the next decade by enacting the sentencing reform options they requested from the North Carolina Sentencing and Policy Advisory Commission in 2001.
In addition, FAMM will work to ensure that lawmakers are aware of both the human and fiscal costs of any new sentencing proposals.
The legislature spent the first weeks of 2007 on organizational issues, electing the speaker and appointing committee chairs and members. North Carolina FAMM Project Director LaFonda Jones-General and Randolph Cloud, FAMM’s political consultant, continued meeting with organizational and political leaders to develop the reform agenda for the coming year. North Carolina members will receive mailed and emailed updates as the legislative session progresses
