N.J. legislative alert

Building support with legislators, groups and communities

Joseph J. Greer became FAMM’s New Jersey campaign director in January and is already building support for the next phase of our campaign to reform New Jersey’s harsh drug-free zones.

A. 2877, sponsored by Assemblyman Peter J. Barnes (D-18, Middlesex), and S. 278, introduced by Sen. Bernard Kenny (D-33, Hudson), would reduce all drug-free zones to 200 feet, enhance the penalty for a zone violation to a second-degree offense, and remove the current mandatory minimum penalty. The bills are still pending in the Assembly and Senate committees and FAMM is working hard to ensure they are considered in 2007.

Help reform law by sharing your story
Educate the public and policymakers about the high cost and injustice of mandatory sentences by sharing your story with FAMM. We need to hear from people who are incarcerated under New Jersey's drug-free school zone laws.

If you are serving a mandatory sentence, or if you are a defense attorney or a family member of someone incarcerated under these laws, please request a case summary form from Molly Gill, FAMM Case Researcher, 1612 K St. N.W., Suite 700, Washington, D.C. 20006.
